Living in Sydney
Moving to Sydney? Here is some general, practical information to help you settle in. Always check the official links for the latest details.
Getting around: public transport & Opal
- Sydney's trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail are run under Transport for NSW.
- Pay with an Opal card, or tap on and off with a contactless credit/debit card or a card in your phone wallet. Always tap on and off.
- Fares are capped daily and weekly, and off-peak train/metro fares are cheaper. Check current fares at transportnsw.info/tickets-fares.
- Eligible tertiary students may get concession fares with a Concession Opal card — check eligibility with your institution and Transport for NSW (many international students are not eligible).
- Use the Transport for NSW trip planner, or apps such as TripView or Google Maps, for real-time times.
Areas
Sydney is large and areas vary a lot in price and travel time. When choosing where to live, consider the commute to your campus or workplace, closeness to a train or metro station, and local shops. Generally, rents are higher near the CBD, harbour and beaches, and lower further west and south-west. Visit an area before committing.
Cost-saving tips
- Share accommodation with bills included makes budgeting easier.
- Shop at supermarkets and local markets; compare unit prices on shelf labels.
- Use off-peak travel and the Opal fare caps.
- Cook at home and share staples with housemates where agreed.
- Get contents insurance for your belongings.
